Tomato Bredie

Nothing says comfort like a warm, slow-cooked Tomato Bredie. This South African classic is given a delicious twist with Regano’s Original Pasta Sauce, adding depth and richness to every bite. Tender lamb, golden onions, and soft potatoes come together in a hearty, flavourful stew that’s perfect with fluffy white rice.

What You’ll Need:

  • Lamb pieces – 1 kg
  • Onions (roughly chopped) – 2
  • Red chilli pickle – 1 tsp
  • Regano Original Pasta Sauce – 1 packet
  • Salt – 1 tsp
  • Tomato paste – 50g
  • Sugar – ½ cup (to taste)
  • Potatoes (quartered) – 4
  • Oil – 1 tbsp
  • Water – as needed

How to Make It:

In a warm pot, add the oil, onions, and red chilli pickle. Braise until the onions are golden and fragrant.

Add the lamb pieces and salt. Keep the lid off and braise until the meat is nicely browned, this step builds flavour.

Once browned, pour in the Regano Original Pasta Sauce and add 1 cup of water. Cover and simmer on medium heat for 20 minutes, checking occasionally and adding more water if needed.

Add the potatoes and cook for another 10 minutes.

Mix the tomato paste with ¼ cup of water and stir it in along with the sugar. Let the bredie simmer gently until the meat and potatoes are soft and tender. Add water if the sauce thickens too much.

Serve hot with fluffy white rice for the ultimate comfort meal.

Pro Tip: Want to deepen the flavour even more? Add a bay leaf or a pinch of cinnamon stick while the meat simmers, just remember to remove it before serving!
